Marriages in Islam for the Divorced Women

In Islam marriages are a commitment of love, harmony and understanding between the man and the woman. However, if, during the course of spending their lives together, they find that they cannot live with each other, it is permissible for them to get divorced. It is a permissible act but highly disliked by Allah as told in a tradition of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) .“Allah did not make anything lawful more abominable to Him than Divorce. Of all the lawful acts the most detestable to Allah is Divorce.”

Detestable as it is, the topic of discussion here is what the man and woman do with their lives after their divorce is finalized. Ofcourse, both the man and the woman are allowed to marry another again. However, while this law of Islam about remarrying is easily acceptable for men (It is written in the Quran:  “If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or that which your right hands possess. That will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.” (Qur’an, 4:3) , people are not so considerate when it comes to a divorced WOMAN remarrying. Many people in our society reject the notion of the divorced woman to restart her life with a better, loving and God fearing person again and live with him in love.

It is sad, really, that this thought persists in society when the biggest example of divorced women able to remarry in Islam is shown in the life of the Holy Prophet himself! Have we ever wondered why the Holy Prophet married all sorts of women during his life time? Divorced, Virgins, Widows? It was because Allah wished him to be a complete example for mankind to follow. So what do the Prophet Mohammad’s numerous weddings show us? That it is permissible to marry a divorced woman, that it is perfectly okay to marry a widow and that it is completely allowed for an older man to marry a virgin provided the man treats all these women with respect and love. Had the Holy Prophet not married all these women in his lifetime, would we have an example to follow? Yet we fail to see and let societal pressures cloud our judgement.

It is written in the Holy Quran about marrying a divorced woman: Then, when Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her, with the necessary (formality) (he divorced her). We joined her in marriage to you; in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the Believers in (the matter of) marriage (Qur’an 33:37). Said in such simple words in the Quran how permissible it is for the divorced woman to remarry. May Allah guide us to the right path.
